Here on the Big Island of Hawaii there are many community events that bring everyone together. But none on such a large scale as Paddling Season! Outrigger Canoe Racing is the State sport of Hawaii, and here on the Big Island we take it more seriously than anyone. Every spring, Paddling takes off all over the islands!
And this year at Jackie Rey’s, we got started early with our Jackie Rey’s Relay Race!
Fundraising is a big part of the Paddling Season, especially for the keiki (kids) programs, and every little bit helps. We felt priveledged to host a beneift race with all proceeds going to keiki programs on the Kona side of Big Island! And of course we catered the race with our ono (delicious) grinds from everyones favorite restaurant in Kailua Kona, Jackie Rey’s Ohana Grill!
Thank you to all of those paddlers who braved the waves and participated in the relay race and to everyone who donated and helped to prepare for this fun event! And Mahalos to Susan Anderson for all of the photos!
We hope to see everyone out cheering for your community’s paddling team this season! And don’t forget to participate in all of those upcoming car washes, steak plate sales and other fundraising events to help support your local team and community. Mahalos!
